Trailblazer Feature : Brisa Halviatti
What about the 10K Trail Project excites you the most?
What excites me most about being a part of the 10K Women Project is the opportunity to witness friends, family and new women embrace their strength and try new things. The majority of women I take hiking are new to it; there’s this cautious layer that slowly gets peeled back further with every mile. I love seeing the shyness fade and the smiles grow, especially after a grueling hike you didn’t think you’d complete. Hiking is such a wonderful opportunity to unplug and reconnect to ourselves, each other and nature. I’m excited for all the laughter and the life lessons that come from realizing it really is about the journey and not the destination!
What role does hiking and the outdoors play in your life? How has it shaped who you are?
For as long as I can remember, I have always felt like everyone but me “knew” who they were. I tried a lot of different hobbies and activities but they all felt like putting on outfits that didn’t quite fit. Hiking was something I had always done. My family would frequently travel, camp and hike, but growing up, it never belonged to me. Fast forward and after taking a few years to trial-and-error many life choices, I began to realize how calm and peaceful I felt whenever I was outdoors. Growing up, I was always an adventurous kid (my mother fondly recalls getting calls from my elementary school letting her know I was getting in trouble for attempting to climb the baseball fence, among other things). So it makes sense that as an adult, what ended up making me happiest were the same simple pleasures that came to me as a child: exploring the unfamiliar. Within two years of buying my first pair of adult hiking boots, I began backpacking, rock climbing and ultimately joined a mountaineering program! Getting outside, scrambling, climbing and logging miles in the backcountry – it wasn’t until I let myself get a little lost that I ended up being found.
