Theler Wetlands is a beautiful wetland sanctuary located in Belfair, Washington with multiple trails and boardwalks.  There are birds, river otters, fish, seals, and deer that you have the chance to view at the wetlands.  The trail starts out of the parking lot near the playgrounds.  You will go down the only hill that exists on this walk and walk along a short boardwalk.  Once there, you have a few different options for proceeding – there’s a boardwalk path to the right that goes through a forested area, a path straight ahead that takes you to the river estuary trail, or a path straight and to the left that takes you out onto a long boardwalk.  There is also a stream with multiple viewing areas to the left, behind an old educational center.

The long boardwalk is a wonderful place to let the kids lead, as most of it has side railings once you get past the woods.  We see dozens of birds here.  We usually then proceed to the river estuary trail.  There is a detour down the road due to a washed out bridge, but there are signs.  You can make the river estuary trail a loop by proceeding straight after the road detour.  This walk will take you over a few bridges and along the river.  Watch for ducks, birds, great blue herons, river otters, and seals along the way.  We have even had an eagle swoop over us on a previous trip.

During the week, the Salmon Center can be visited just over Roessel Road (as you make your loop around).  The Salmon Center is a wonderful non-profit with you pick farms and has farm animals (be careful as the electrical fence may be turned on).

On the way back after the detour, we usually turn left to finish on the short boardwalk through the forested area.  There is also a playground for the kids to visit after their walk.
