Tunnel Drive Trail
About This Trail
Take a walk or bike ride along the Arkansas River! This trail follows the beginning of the Royal Gorge on the east side of the canyon. It doesn’t get as deep, narrow, or impressive as the part of the canyon where the bridge is located, but does overlook the river valley.
The trail starts with a short, steep 5 minute paved incline, but is mostly flat the rest of the way. It is packed dirt, easy to navigate with any type of stroller. There are 2 short and 1 long tunnel near the beginning of the trail, no flashlight needed. Wildflowers dot the hillsides along the trail, with an occasional rafter or train down below near the river. There are also a few wooden bridges along the way. The trail is supposed to end at a viewpoint of the canyon, but the very end was closed due to construction when we went.

My name is Nicole Dominick, and I’ve been hiking with Hike it Baby since May 2016 with my daughter. She is now 4.5 years old and has hiked over 400 miles! She has been carried for most of those miles, but we enjoy every journey. We were both born and raised in Southern CA but now live in Colorado Springs, CO.
