Trailblazer feature: Katherine Takata

What about the 10K project excites you the most?
Getting women and girls out in our beautiful state. Many haven’t even touched the surface on the amazing hikes this area has to offer.

What role does hiking and the outdoors play in your life? How has it shaped who you are?
Hiking has helped me overcome postpartum depression, and my 7-month-old twins LOVE being outdoors. Hiking has allowed me to meet other women in the same situation as myself and we challenge each other to go outside.

Do you have a hiking story you want to share with us?

The first time I ever tandem carried my twins was about a month ago. I hardly ever carried them at all. We mostly stroller walk so I was a little frightened they would not like the carrier at all. I met a handful of moms at a trailhead for what I thought was going to be a few miles hike. I was expecting it to be 50 degrees but turned out to be about 35 degrees. A mom helped me place my baby boy in the back carrier and my baby girl in the front. Amazingly, they were not fussing and appeared to be happy. We took off on our hike and the twins were having a great time. What I thought was going to be a short hike ended up being roughly 8 miles, and for a mom who never carries her babies, it was quite a doosey for the first time. Besides being a beautiful hike, it was great to witness other moms and their babies experiencing the outdoors and having an amazing time. After I got to the car, I was extremely proud of myself and thought to myself, “If I could do that, I can do anything!”.
